Cold Weather Grilling Tips: Charcoal & Gas Grills
The grilling party doesn’t have to stop just because the temperature has dropped. With a few simple modifications you can keep your gas or charcoal grill cooking even during winter!
- 1. For Best Results – Use a grill cover and keep grill covered during winter
- • This prevents buildup of ice, snow and unwanted moisture
- 2. Keep Propane tank at least half full or half empty
- 3. If possible, place grill in a somewhat wind sheltered area
- • This will keep windchill temps down
- 4. Allow extra time for warm up – 10-15 minutes (depending on outside ambient temps)
- 5. Weber gas grills will be the least affected by cold weather
- • Cook as you would in warm weather temps after grill is fully pre-heated
- 6. Weber Charcoal kettles will be the most affected by cold weather
- • Use about 10-15% more charcoal in the kettle to build heat faster and sustain cooking during cold weather
- • Use of a chimney will speed up the ignition time and build heat faster for cooking
- • Cook as you would in warm weather temps after grill is fully pre-heated
- • Allow grill to cool completely, turn off gas and cover
